RangoliRangoli

Chirag Mulia's Rangoli

Rangoli is one of the most popular art forms in India. It is a form of decoration that uses finely ground white powder and colours, and is used on Diwali ( the festival of lights) in India to welcome the goddess Laxmi (the goddess of wealth). The materials I use for Rangoli take on either a flat appearance, when a uniform monolayer of powders are sprinkled or a 3-D effect when different sized grains like cereals, pulses etc are used either in their natural colouring or tinted with natural dyes are used. I mostly use coarse colored powder, confetti, flowers and tea lights to enhance the designs’ bright appearance. I have mainly concentrated on 3D effects, modern art and traditional Indian designs.

Captivity by Michael HayesMichael Hayes

The initial concept for my body of work entitled Captivity was the idea of confinement. With this series of photographs, I set about exploring representations of captivity through semi-abstracted images. Exploring both the architecture and interiors of confinement, containment and captivity. The intention was to create somewhat claustrophobic photographs that reiterated the subject matter, employing experimental ways of working with photography.

For the main focus of my work, I explored two themes, animals and people. For the human side of the project, I was interested in the architecture of confinement, photographing tower and office blocks from different. For the animal side of this project, I explored the interiors and environments of zoos and aquariums in the UK.

Anthony Bernard HarrisAnthony Barnard Harris

4 August to 1 September 2007
The paintings of Anthony Barnard Harris (born 1937) only became available in 2006. Harris’s work takes a wry attractive look at modern life. His distinctive paintings mostly depict aspects of womanhood and his charming compositions are sometimes playful, sometimes thought-provoking but usually surprisingly beautiful.

Harris’s extraordinary use of colour gives a luminous quality to his paintings. His drawing skills give an elegance of line and style. His paintings reflect the lives of women with attitude. He works with inks, acrylic pencil and oil. Much of his work is on paper. email: madeleine.shaw@btinternet.com

Daniel Shadbolt Portraits

Portrait of David Cauldwell by Daniel Shadbolt

30 June to 4 August 2007
I have been painting in oils for over ten years. portraiture was my first interest, and, although now I paint still life and landscape, a face or figure is still the most engaging subject for me to work from. I studied at Chelsea (2000 - 2003), and afterwards achieved an award for drawing at the Prince's Drawing School (2003 - 2004).

I have exhibited with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters (2006), at the Lynn Painter Stainers Award for representational painting (2005), and was an exhibitor in the BP Portrait Award (2002). I have also had various exhibitions in groups such as the "OUT WITH IN" show currently at La Galleria in Pall Mall (until 9th June 2007), and various solo shows such as "PENELOPE'S LODGER" at Turf gallery (November 2006) on Westbourne Park Road. The portraits I paint can be quick studies or more prolonged visual investigations, and, due to the observational techniques involved, require sittings. I am interested in undertaking commissions, and my studio is fairly close to the library. Daniel - 020 7221 1947 or 07900837472
