May's bulletin provides news on the library's temporary location, the progress of building work and consultation excercises.
Work to improve Church Street Library began in January 2009. During this large scale refurbishment a temporary library is being provided close by at 97-99 Church Street (the old butchers shop). Opening times remain the same, to find out more contact the library.
In October 2007 the Big Lottery Fund awarded Westminster Libraries £1,066,097 for the redevelopment of Church Street Library. This money is being used to open up the basement levels at Church Street Library for additional library, learning and community use and will allow for the introduction of exciting, much needed services to the local Church Street Community.
By opening up the two lower basement floors of the library for public access and enclosing the area to the rear of the building the redeveloped library will triple in size. The new library will boast a larger children's area, study facilities, an IT area, a quiet reading zone, a learning centre and a community space for use by local organisations. Provision will also be made for bicycle parking and toilets (which include baby changing and disabled facilities).
Following extensive consultation, internal designs have been finalised and planning permission has been granted. Work started on site in January 2009 and is due to be completed in early 2010. You can see photos of the building here.
