The Westminster Women’s Safe Space (WWSS)
About the service
The Westminster Women’s Safe Space (WWSS) provides three emergency respite rooms for women needing an overnight stay. WWSS staff collaborate with referrers to arrange for clients to transition out the next day. Depending on individual circumstances, suitability, and availability, clients who utilize these emergency beds may have the option to move into the longer-term respite rooms within WWSS. Each situation is carefully managed on a case-by-case basis.
The Westminster Women’s Safe Space (WWSS) offers an additional 13 temporary respite rooms, available for up to three months, specifically for women who are currently rough sleeping or at risk of doing so and who are experiencing or at risk of experiencing domestic abuse or violence against women and girls. Each room includes a private bedroom and en-suite bathroom, with shared kitchen and laundry facilities available in clusters of three or five rooms.
WWSS accommodates various support needs, and pets are considered case-by-case. Five of these rooms are designated for women with no recourse to public funds, who will receive food vouchers instead of meals.
Assessment and reconnection workers at WWSS conduct thorough assessments for all clients in these respite rooms. They continue to work closely with referral agents, connecting clients to relevant services for ongoing support based on their evolving needs. All residents, except those without recourse to public funds, must apply for housing benefits.
How to access the service
Referrals must be from services based in Westminster only, and priority will be given to Westminster rough sleeping teams. The service will consider referrals from both chain-verified and non-chain-verified individuals.
