Local Area Coordinators

Information about Local Area Coordinators and how they support communities.

What is a Local Area Coordinator

We have Local Area Coordinators in some local areas of Westminster. They will take the time to help you make sense of all the things going on in your life and help you think about the steps needed to make a change you in your life. This could involve:

  • taking steps to live healthier
  • developing relationships and community networks
  • finding opportunities to develop your skills and get into employment

Traditional support services often assess the problem for you, intervene and fix them. Instead, Local Area Coordinators walk alongside you to help you build your own strengths, gifts, practical resources and community networks, and support you to access formal supports and services if that is what you feel you need.

Local Area Coordinators are there for the whole community and work in and of the local area they are based in. They are available to everyone living in that area through a simple introduction with no referral or time limit.

As well as helping individuals and families, they can help local community groups:

  • keep going and grow by introducing more people
  • finding funding opportunities
  • to set up groups by supporting people when someone wants to set up their own community group and activities.

This approach has been going on for many years in other places. Read more about the Local Area Coordinator approach.(link is external)
