Information about hate crimes and how to report them
There is no place for hate in Westminster.
A hate crime is defined as 'any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice'.
This can be based on a:
- person's race or perceived race
- religion or perceived religion
- sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation
- disability or perceived disability
- any crime motivated by hostility or prejudice against a person who is transgender or perceived to be transgender.
If you have been the subject of a hate crime, the police advise the following:
- if someone is in immediate danger or needs support right away, then dial 999
- hate crimes can be reported online by calling 101 or at a police station
- you can also report crime anonymously through CrimeStoppers
