Maida Hill Market improvement works
More information about the construction works taking place around Maida Hill Market.
We are undertaking a series of improvement works aimed at making the Maida Hill Market area safer, greener, and more welcoming for all residents, businesses and visitors. Most public space improvements were finished in 2024.
The final phase, including the new accessible toilet and the nearby planter will be completed in 2025.
These changes are designed to enhance the overall functionality of the space, address anti-social behaviour, and create a vibrant community hub.
Designs have been produced in response to longstanding ideas and aspirations of local community groups and networks.
This work forms part of our North Paddington Programme.
Below you can see a bird’s-eye view illustrating Maida Hill Market and the proposed toilet facilities:

Improvement works
The improvements focus on creating an accessible, sustainable and community-focused space through several key features:
New public toilets

A modern, fully accessible public toilet block will replace the current underground facilities, increasing the usable area of the square.
Located where the existing unit connects to services, the new ground-level facility will have three toilets, consisting of one fully accessible toilet and two additional units, responding directly to community feedback.
The building will feature reclaimed stone cladding to minimise embodied carbon.
Pedestrian-priority space
Creating a welcoming gateway through permanent pedestrianisation of Fernhead Road and Walterton Road, whilst maintaining essential access for emergency vehicles and businesses. A new north-south cycle lane is carefully integrated to prevent pedestrian conflicts.
Flexible community space

The south side of the market will become a dynamic public square with dedicated market infrastructure and power supplies for events, supporting activities from casual meetups to organised events.
Safety and accessibility
Enhanced lighting, clear sightlines, and protective planting create a secure environment, complemented by new seating areas and removal of physical barriers.
