Odour problems
Find out about odour problems and the types of issues we can and cannot investigate.
Odours can be caused by:
- sewage
- poor waste practices
- the keeping of animals
- some commercial kitchen practices
Odours can become a problem if it:
- interferes with the use or enjoyment of your home
- affects your health
We can investigate odour problems from industrial, commercial, or other business premises.
If you make a report of an odour problem, an officer will review your report within 4 working days.
If you think an odour could be gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service: 0800 111 999.
Restaurant and commercial kitchens
Westminster has lots of restaurants and commercial kitchens that may release cooking odours and smoke into the air.
If smoke or odour from a commercial kitchen interferes with the use or enjoyment of your home, or affects your health, you can make a report to us.
Odours we cannot investigate
We cannot investigate strong smells or odours caused by:
- cooking smells from a person’s home
- cigarette smoke travelling between properties
