Waste Action Squad

The Waste Action Squad is a city-wide scheme to tackle the blight of waste issues, including rubbish that is illegally dumped.

What is the Waste Action Squad?

The Waste Action Squad has been created to help keep Westminster’s streets clean, by reducing the impact of waste, dumped items and litter on our environment.

We are developing an approach that beings together multiple council teams to gather intelligence, identify problems in your neighbourhoods and provide solutions.

We aim to offer a balanced approach of education, support and enforcement in a localised setting. As part of this approach, we have developed a rolling programme of pop-up events throughout the city, to allow us to engage with residents on our streets.

These pop-up events are an opportunity for you to come and speak with us in person, and share any concerns, opinions or ideas you may have to improve the waste management of your neighbourhoods, so that together, we can improve the condition of our environment and help keep Westminster’s streets clean.

Who makes up the Waste Action Squad?

The Waste Action Squad is formed of officers from multiple teams that are designed to provide clean and safe neighbourhoods.

This includes City Inspector enforcement officers, staff from our waste and recycling team as well as our waste and street cleansing partners, Veolia.

At each of our pop-up events, we will have officers who are dedicated to working in your area. This is a great opportunity for you to speak to your local officers in person, to learn about our work and share your own experiences, opinions and concerns.

Working together to keep our streets clean

Keeping the streets of Westminster clean is an enormous challenge.

180,000 tonnes of waste is collected per year and one million waste and recycling collections are offered per week, yet the problem of illegally dumped waste continues to impact our environment and the cleanliness of our streets.

With a population of over 250,000 people, 25 million tourists visiting a year and 400,000 commuting to work in Westminster, the reality is, looking after our environment is a responsibility shared by all who visit, live or work in the Borough.

There are some simple steps we can take as individuals that collectively, can have a huge positive impact on the cleanliness of our streets and neighbourhoods:
