Mortimer Street and Wigmore Street two-way traffic switch
The roads around Mortimer Street and Wigmore Street will be closed 20 to 23 February as road works near their completion.
Works to convert Mortimer Street and Wigmore Street to two-way traffic are nearing completion. The projects aim to deliver a simplified road network by rebalancing road space and traffic signal timing. This will benefit pedestrians while maintaining appropriate traffic capacity and discouraging high speeds.
Road closures
The change to two-way traffic operation requires a 4-day temporary road closure in the area. This is scheduled to take place from 8am on Thursday 20 February until midday on Sunday 23 February 2025.
During this period Mortimer Street, Great Titchfield Street, Wigmore Street, Cavendish Place and the western and northern arms of Cavendish Square will be closed to traffic. Traffic diversions will be clearly indicated. Pavements will remain open and pedestrian access to all properties will be maintained at all times.
Changes from 23 February
Once roads reopen on Sunday 23 February, the following changes will have been implemented:
- Mortimer Street will be two-way between Regent Street and Great Titchfield Street.
- Great Titchfield Street will become one-way from south to north, it is currently one-way north to south between Mortimer Street and Margaret Street.
- Wigmore Street and Cavendish Place will operate two-way traffic between Wimpole Street and Regent Street.
- Cavendish Square, west side, will be one-way from north to south, it is currently one-way from south to north.
- Revisions to vehicle restrictions placed on those junctions to facilitate ease of traffic with the new arrangements.
A number of traffic marshals will remain at key pedestrian crossing points for a few days to assist with the new traffic layout.
