Fire Safety
Advice regarding fire safety
We understand you may have some questions regarding fire safety following the events at Grenfell Tower in June 2017. We have put together a FAQs sheet covering a range questions you have already asked us, to help answer them.
First and foremost we want to assure you that you and your family are safe within your home managed by Westminster City Council. If you live in a tower block please read the London Fire Brigade's advice specifically for those in high rise buildings.
What we're doing to make sure you feel safe in your home
- Sprinklers: we are currently inspecting all buildings over 30 metres to look at the feasability of fitting sprinklers. Will be providing updates on this in the new year.
- Fire doors: a fire door inspection is underway in buildings over six storeys with enclosed communal areas. We will replace any communal or tenant doors that do not meet the required standards and contact leaseholders if their doors do not meet the regulations.
- Fire risk assessments: fire risk assessments identify risks and hazards within a building in a written document to evaluate, remove and reduce the risks. We have already carried out joint inspections with the London Fire Brigade (LFB) of all of our buildings of 10 storeys and above with open access such as balconies.
Request a copy of your buildings fire risk assessment
You can complete this form to request a copy of the Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) for your block.
There are also some things you can do to ensure fire safety in your home
- Smoke alarms: a working smoke alarm could save your life. We fit smoke alarms in all our tenanted properties, which we test every year. It is essential that you keep this appointment to make sure yours is working and can keep you safe. It is also recommended that you test it weekly by pressing the button until the alarm sounds.
At all times remember:
- self-closing doors should never be wedged open
- keep all escape routes in your home and communal areas clear of rubbish
- never leave lit cigarettes, candles or other flames unattended
- do not cook if you are tired or have been drinking
