Support in education, employment and training

Find out about the help available to you as a care leaver.

We want you to succeed in your education, training and employment. We care about how you are doing and are always ready to celebrate your achievements with you.

If you choose to go to college or university, we will support you with your choices and the application process through Education and Employment Officers and other staff from the Virtual School, your social worker, PA or college tutor.

Through these, we will match your aspirations, talents and interests to the type of education you want to pursue.

All colleges and sixth forms have a Designated Person who supports young people in care and care leavers, and they can advise you about the available support.

College and training

16 to 19 Bursary Fund

If you are between 16 and 19 years old, in full-time education, and under care, you may be eligible for a bursary. Your college, sixth form or training centre will pay this financial support directly into your bank account.

Age 19 and over

If you choose to continue studying at college after turning 19, there is guidance on Student Finance options to help cover the costs of certain courses that may no longer be free.

University

If you decide to attend university, you can receive support with UCAS fees, securing tuition fees and maintenance loans, and accessing care leaver grants or hardship funds (availability varies by university).

We will provide you with a Higher Education (HE) bursary or ‘Parental Contribution’ of up to £5000 each academic year for up to four years. We may also contribute to 52 weeks of accommodation. You will need to complete a Section 24 Finance request, as well as relevant evidence and agreement with the terms and conditions of the funding.

University and Staying Put

If you choose to stay with your foster carer under a staying-put arrangement, the Parental Contribution is reduced to £2,000, as the council pays the carer directly and your living expenses are lower. For more details on the conditions for receiving the Parental Contribution, you can seek advice from your Personal Adviser or social worker.

Employment, training and enrichment

Our specialist Senior Housing and Employment Coach (Economy Team) and The Virtual School Team (including the Education and Employment Officer) can support you with job and education applications and preparation.

They will provide you with:

  • careers information, advice and support
  • opportunities for work experience, apprenticeships and employment within the council and local employers
  • help writing a CV or job applications
  • help with interview preparation, which includes a one-off payment of up to £60 towards suitable clothing
  • wide range of enrichment activities, including sports, music, leisure and day trips
  • one-to-one or group coaching and mentoring where needed
