The adverse impacts of air pollution disproportionately affects young people. That is why tackling air pollution around our schools is a top priority for Westminster City Council.
Shaped by our Fairer Westminster strategy, we have allocated £1.1million that schools can use towards projects and interventions that have a positive impact on air quality and the environment.
What is the Schools Clean Air Fund?
To improve air quality around and in schools, and reduce pupils, staff and parents’ exposure to harmful pollution, we have launched the Schools Clean Air Fund to financially assist nurseries and schools in Westminster to improve the quality of air surrounding them.
We have created an interactive ‘story map’ that helps explain Westminster’s air quality and the impact poor air quality can have on our children’s health. You can also see some example projects that Westminster schools have already implemented with grants from the fund.

The Schools Clean Air Fund is an exciting opportunity for nurseries and schools to invest in the health and wellbeing of their pupils and to feel empowered to take meaningful action towards combating the effects of air pollution.
We have produced a list of potential project ideas to address the poor quality of air. Please note, that suggestions are not limited to this list, and we are open to listening to other ideas pupils, teachers and parents feel will make a difference.
Westminster's Carbon Offset Fund is available for community organisations, including schools, to finance the delivery of carbon saving projects. The fund is focused on projects which deliver higher carbon savings, such as retrofitting of buildings, renewable energy installation, and installing low carbon heat sources.
