Massage and special treatment
Once the licensing team has completed the application process, the Environmental Health Consultation Team is consulted on Special Treatment License applications. The team is an informal internal consultee who assesses Public Safety. (The Police and Fire Brigade are the only other statutory consultees.) There is a 28-day consultation period before a license is granted.
Legislation considerations
Health and Safety at Work, etc Act 1974 and associated regulations.
The London Local Authorities Act 1991.
Site Visits
New applications require a site visit, which an Environmental Health Officer will arrange during trading hours. It is preferred that the premises be built and ready to trade before a site visit is agreed upon.
What we look for on a site visit
Premises layout:
- premises layout and treatment rooms
- stair safety and handrails
- structurally sound premises
- cleansable (smooth and impervious surfaces)
- natural or mechanical ventilation
- electrical safety within the premises, including PAT testing and lighting.
- toilet provision, hand washing facilities and sanitary bin
- appropriate storage and COSHH considerations for chemicals
Treatments:
- what treatments are offered
- what equipment is being used
- wre-consultation forms
- consent forms (where required)
- medical history (where required)
- aftercare (where required)
Any further documentation required, such as Local Rules by a laser safety adviser, should be available to view in order to have the license application signed off.
Cleaning and Waste collection
- hand washing facilities should be accessible within each treatment room to be used before and after treatment with liquid soap, running water, mixer tap and hand drying facilities.
- general cleaning, including surface and equipment cleaning, that would be suitable for cleaning bodily fluids where required.
- sharps bin and collection where required
- suitable waste collection provision.
- COSHH
