CCTV

Find out how Westminster City Council is using CCTV for safety across it's estates and properties.

The housing service has long invested in CCTV on its housing estates and properties to help us prevent and deter crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB), as well as to ensure the safety and security of employees, members of the public, and the council’s buildings and assets.

The service manages over 600 cameras in and around its housing estates and properties. In addition, we manage over 800 cameras serving lifts. There is signage to let people know that CCTV is in operation.

Any new systems must meet a "test of appropriateness" and have sign off by the CCTV Governance Group. We always encourage other interventions including designing out crime before any new installation is approved.

There is no Control Room and none of the estate cameras are actively monitored. Footage is stored for 30 days, during which time it can be retrieved as and when there is cause to download it. After 30 days it is automatically deleted.

CCTV is treated in the same way as all data the Council stores about individuals. You are entitled to a copy of any information we hold about you. You can do this by making a subject access request.
