Keeping safe this Christmas in the city

Find out how to keep safe in Westminster during the festive season.

Product safety

As Christmas draws closer, you may be planning on what presents to purchase for your loved ones or which Christmas lights to display to outdo the neighbours. It is important when making purchases that the products are safe.

Our Trading Standards team recommends:

  • Purchase only from well-known high-street retailers. Be wary of websites and platforms that allow third-party traders to sell goods with little oversight.
  • Ensure the packaging displays a CE or UKCA mark when purchasing electrical items and toys. The manufacturer applies this mark to confirm that the product meets all the required safety standards. The packaging or product must also display the manufacturer's and UK importer's name and address.
  • When purchasing products such as bubble bath, fragrances, and makeup, the packaging must display a UK-based trader's name and address, the 'responsible person' for the product, and its compliance with UK law. If any of this information is missing, do not purchase.
