Staff training on Prevent
Prevent Awareness Training for Educational Institutions
[Schools] should make sure that staff have training that gives them the knowledge and confidence to identify children at risk of being drawn into terrorism, and to challenge extremist ideas which can be used to legitimise terrorism.
HM Government, Prevent Duty Guidance 2015
Our Prevent Team is able to provide advice and support local schools and colleges in the following areas:
- briefing senior leadership teams or governors on how they might respond to recent changes in legislation and satisfy Ofsted requirements
- assisting with curriculum design to provide specific learning opportunities that challenge extremist narratives and promote the exchange of ideas, critical analysis and tolerance
- assisting with organising relevant external speakers and student workshops
Staff training
The trainers were both very good at overcoming any ill-informed concerns we trainees may have had that would have got in the way of our ability to properly evaluate the course.
Teaching Professional
“Thank you. This session has made me more aware of comments, attitudes & behaviours I need to look out for.”

The Prevent team also deliver staff training sessions to improve the ability of staff to understand, recognise and refer vulnerabilities that can lead to radicalisation.
Our free training sessions for staff explore key issues relating to radicalisation and extremism, who can be more vulnerable to it, what you can do to prevent it, and most importantly, how your concerns about a vulnerable individual can be appropriately shared in order to access specialist support.
Workshop to Raise Awareness of Prevent
The Workshop to Raise Awareness of Prevent (WRAP) is a 90 minute workshop for all frontline professionals and people who work directly with community members and vulnerable individuals.
Delivered in a school or college setting, the training is suitable for all staff.
The content of the training has been amended to make it specifically applicable to educational institutions in Westminster.
We also now offer shorter refresher WRAP training sessions to individuals and organisations that have received already received a full training session fairly recently.
Attending WRAP training should help to ensure that staff:
- understand the Prevent agenda and the role of educational institutions within it.
- understand why some people are able to influence or manipulate others to commit crimes or terrorist acts
- develop their existing expertise and professional judgment to recognise individuals who may be vulnerable to radicalisation and to recognise when an individual might be in need of our help
- understand what help and support can be provided
- understand how to make safeguarding referrals to Channel, Prevent’s multi-agency safeguarding panel.
