Different types of air pollutants measured
The air quality data platform shows data from seven pollutants measured across Westminster. The table below shows the types of health effects experienced by these pollutants at elevated levels:
Pollutant | Health effects at very high levels |
---|---|
Pollutant NO, Nitric Oxide NO2, Nitrogen Dioxide SO2, Sulphur Dioxide O3, Ozone |
Health effects at very high levels These gases irritate the airways of the lungs, increasing the symptoms of those suffering from lung diseases |
Pollutant PM2.5 PM10 Particulate matter |
Health effects at very high levels Fine particles can be carried deep into the lungs where they can cause inflammation and a worsening of heart and lung diseases. The number after the ‘PM’ indicates the size of the particle, the smaller the number, the smaller the particle and the deeper into the lung it can travel. |
Pollutant CO, Carbon Monoxide |
Health effects at very high levels This gas prevents the uptake of oxygen by the blood. This can lead to a significant reduction in the supply of oxygen to the heart, particularly in people suffering from heart disease |
