Health and deprivation data
The health and deprivation data tab on the data platform provides information on two key health conditions which can be worsened by poor air quality.
Asthma
Asthma is a common lung condition that causes occasional breathing difficulties. There are many causes and triggers for asthma, including air pollution.
The last available data set for asthma is for the calendar year of 2021. The data set shows then number of people with an asthma diagnosis, per 1,000 of the population registered with a GP and is broken down by ward.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the name for a group of lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties. Like asthma, there are many causes and triggers for asthma, including air pollution.
The last available data set for COPD is for the calendar year of 2021. The data set shows then number of people with a COPD diagnosis, per 1,000 of the population registered with a GP and is broken down by ward.
Deprivation index
The deprivation index is a composite measure of deprivation taking into account:
- income
- employment
- health deprivation and disability
- education
- skills training
- crime
- barriers to housing
- services and living environment
The figure provided is an average ward deprivation score on a scale from 1, the most deprived, to 10, the least deprived.
Find further information about the index of multiple deprivation. The most recent data set available nationally is for 2019.
Ward boundary changes in 2022
Ward boundaries changes within Westminster came into effect on 5 May 2022. This means that for ward based data sets prior to this date, these are currently mapped and published against the ward boundaries as were in existence at that time.
Therefore, the health and deprivation maps available are mapped against ward boundaries prior to the May 2022 change. The air quality data is mapped against the current ward boundaries. As more up to date data sets become available for health and deprivation data, these will be mapped against the new ward boundaries.
