The Westminster Cycling Strategy provides details on the range of projects that we will be developing over the coming years to encourage more people to take up cycling, to improve facilities for existing cyclists and to improve safety.
A key programme for Westminster will be the implementation of new several cycle lanes and ‘Cycleway’ routes. This will contribute to the network of cycle routes across Central London and will be developed in partnership with Transport for London (TfL) and other authorities in Central London.

The following cycling schemes have been prioritised for implementation, subject to more detailed feasibility, design work and consultation.

Consultation Updates
In November and December 2021 we consulted on the ‘Cycling Movement Strategy’ temporary cycle lanes. The consultation sought stakeholder views on retaining the 11 temporary cycle lanes installed across the City of Westminster as part of the City Council’s covid response.
The consultation responses report, as well as findings from the 18 month monitoring period, was tabled at the Cabinet Member for City Management Briefing on 26 February 2022, detailing the outcomes of the consultation.
The consultation received almost 1,500 responses, with the majority of respondents in support retaining the temporary lanes whilst we develop proposals to create permanent facilities. Residents responses were more than 71% in support and, non-residents were more than 80% in support. Additionally, the outcomes from site monitoring further recommended that all the facilities were retained.

The Cabinet Member has given agreement to proceed with retaining and developing permanent proposals for all 11 locations.
Temporary traffic orders will now be put in place to extend the duration of the temporary lanes on site whilst we develop permanent proposals. These proposals will be consulted on again prior to the Council making a decision on whether to make the facilities permanent or not.

We will consult publicly on implementing the new facilities on a lane by lane basis. The consultations will likely be in batches as we develop the proposals.
Once we have consulted on proposals, we will make a decision on a lane by lane basis on which, if any, of the facilities we implement on our roads.
