The Making of Chinatown touring exhibition, 2021

The Making of Chinatown exhibition ran up to 15 September 2021.

The Making of Chinatown exhibition, curated by Chinese Arts Now, presents both the factual historical imagery and text documenting the development of the area along with video installations of living histories of the people that lived, worked in and helped shape the area into what is now considered an iconic cultural precinct in London.

Through in-depth oral history interviews and materials from both established and personal archives, this exhibition shows how Chinatown was made and what it means to the people who have contributed to its development.

This exhibition marks the beginning of the process to document formally for the first time the history of this iconic part of London.

The exhibition also presents Augmented Chinatown 2.0. an app from the UK’s leading platform for British Chinese art, Chinese Arts Now, producers and creators of art telling Chinese stories in contemporary and innovative ways.

Women’s History Month 2021, celebrating Westminster’s women

The exhibition, led by the Women’s Network steering group, celebrated hidden talents, showcasing that whilst not only doing a remarkable job for the council, our female colleagues are multifaceted with wide ranging talents and alongside their day jobs are also mothers, sisters, aunties, carers, teachers and friends.

While Women’s History Month in March is traditionally a chance to celebrate the contribution and achievements of women through time, of which there are many interesting and inspiring stories to be told, this exhibition focussed on very recent history – sharing stories, experiences, thoughts and feelings of our female colleagues during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The exhibition was the product of three artist led workshops held in February in collaboration with Iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts) and artist Zarah Hussain.
