Your pension career stage

Read our curated guides to help you make the most of your pension based on where you are in your career or retirement type.

Flexibly retired professional

Welcome to your personalised pension page talking about flexible retirement. It can be an exciting time in your life but also a confusing one as you finish one career, draw your pension from that career and at the same time start a new career. We want to help you get clarity and control so that you can enjoy this time in your life.

About me

I have completed my first career and am flexibly retired. I want to enjoy my new work-life balance.

My pension knowledge

I know I can start a new pension, but I am still trying to get myself oriented with my first pension and I need clarity on my position.

Three things to know about your pension

  1. If you start another LGPS pension, you start with the same life cover as anyone else does on day one of your joining the scheme. You will need to be vested in the scheme for two years before you can draw down this second LGPS pension.
  2. Because you’re drawing your LGPS pension from your previous career and also working and paying into a new LGPS pension, your tax codes may take a while to settle down. Contact HMRC if you’re concerned. We cannot advise you on tax.
  3. When you fully retire, if you were vested in the second LGPS pension, you will draw this pension down as well as your first one.

My need-to-knows

  • What membership options do I have with my second LGPS pension?
  • Can I see both LGPS pensions in the Member Portal?
  • What if I want to reduce my working hours further? How does that affect my LGPS pension in payment and the new LGPS pension I’m accruing?
