Information for guests

Information and support for Ukrainian refugees.

Finance and employment support

As a Ukrainian guest under the Homes for Ukraine Scheme, you have access to a range of services and support to help you settle in the UK.

Finance

Bank accounts

All adult guests should open a UK bank account as soon as possible. This will be necessary to receive benefits and salary.

Find information about choosing a bank and applying for an account on GOV.UK.

If you need help with opening a bank account, please contact the Ukraine Response Team.

Getting a National Insurance Number

Any Ukrainian National who is not claiming benefits, wishes to work in the UK, and requires a National Insurance Number for employment purposes can apply for a National Insurance Number online.

It is important to note that a National Insurance Number is not required to start work. All individuals seeking employment can start work provided they can demonstrate that they have the right to work in the UK.

Employment support

While you can currently work in the UK with a National Insurance Number and BRP, finding a job at your previous level might be challenging. Your occupation in the UK might not exactly match your previous role, however there are many opportunities to explore and grow. We have partnered with a dedicated Employment Service to help you maximise your income and explore suitable career paths based on your skills and experience. You can contact us for more details.

Avoiding job scams

We would like to remind our guests to be vigilant when exploring the job market and income opportunities in the UK, to avoid becoming a victim of fraud. Here are some of the red flags:

  • legitimate employers do not charge fees for processing applications or training.
  • Trial periods should always be paid. Do not work for free with the promise of a future job that may never materialise.
  • working for cash or under the National Minimum Wage is illegal.

If you feel you or someone you know has been exploited, please seek further advice by contacting the Police(link is external) or Citizens Advice Bureau(link is external) immediately.
